Hello! My name is Mary Puntenney
Welcome to Family Connections Therapy! I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT 104993), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC 4906), and Registered Play Therapist. I am an active member of the Association for Play Therapy, a board member for the San Diego chapter of the California Association of Marriage & Family Therapists (CAMFT), and part of the planning committee for the annual Critical Issues in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CICAMH) conference.
I absolutely love working with kiddos! My focus is providing developmentally appropriate services to children of all ages (zero to 18 years old) and their families. I grew up in a small town outside of Portland, Oregon, and I knew I wanted to be a pediatric therapist when I realized many of my adult clients were seeking therapy for problems that originated from childhood. I was thrilled to learn I could combine my enthusiasm for working with children and my delight in being a therapist. I am passionate about my work, and I care deeply about the families I serve.
I also enjoy cooking, yoga, walking my dog, hiking, boogie boarding, and exploring San Diego. If you ever want to chat about Stand-Up Paddle boarding, let’s talk!

How I Can Help
Parents and children alike can feel stuck and overwhelmed with their struggles. I am passionate about helping families heal, find solutions, and live well together.
Many childhood mental health issues can be effectively addressed through Child Centered Play Therapy – which I offer here at Family Connections Therapy. Here are a few videos I offer to help parents and children learn more about what I do:
Understanding Play Therapy – for Children
Understanding Play Therapy – for Parents
Although most adults can easily articulate how they feel at any given time, children do not have those abilities yet. In the same way adults communicate through talking, children communicate through play. Play therapy helps children express feelings in developmentally-appropriate ways, increase self-efficacy, develop coping skills for distress tolerance, and follow limits when set by parents or teachers.
Parental involvement is very important to me as a therapist, as parents are key to facilitating their child’s growth. With the use of Play Therapy, I can help your child work through difficult situations in a fun, low-stress environment, to help bring them to a healthier mental state.
Kids that work with me can learn how to:
- Use appropriate social skills
- Identify their feelings and express them openly
- Process difficult life events
- Develop comfort around others
- Regulate their emotions
- Engage with family members and friends
- Laugh and reconnect with themselves
