Hello! My name is Ashley Cherry.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT 110758). I grew up in Nebraska, where I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Doane College and my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I moved to San Diego to complete my doctoral studies, a Psy. D. in Marriage and Family Therapy at CSPP, Alliant International University.
When I decided to pursue a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, I knew I wanted to work with children. However, it was not until I was pursuing my doctorate that I got the opportunity to work with young children and their families. When I started work with this population I knew that I had found the population I was passionate about and meant to work with.
As a Nebraskan, I vacationed in San Diego and decided I would figure out how to make it my home! After relocating for school, I knew I would never leave! In my free time, I enjoy running, going to the beach, cooking, hanging out with my dog, enjoying the beautiful San Diego weather, and of course Nebraska football.
I have 10 years of experience as a therapist working in various settings. I have worked with multiple populations from adults and teens to preschool age children. Additionally, I have research experience with transgender children and their families, as my doctoral dissertation was written on the experience of parents of transgender children who transitioned prior to puberty.
How I Can Help
Adults and children see the world through very different lenses. They communicate and interact with the world very differently. Therefore, as a parent, it can become very overwhelming and even frustrating at times to communicate effectively with children and understand the child’s needs and wants. It is my job to bridge that gap and assist children and parents in communicating and engaging in a way that is helpful and meaningful to both.
When life is feeling challenging and overwhelming, I am here to offer support and reassurance. As a therapist I believe that treatment is a collaborate process, I will work with you to create treatment goals that met your needs and assist you in working with your strengths to assist you and your family in overcoming life’s obstacles.
As a child and family therapist, I will use a combination of child-directed play, strength-based parenting techniques and skills, as wells as CBT and TF-CBT.
Kids that work with me will learn:
- Age appropriate social skills
